OU Conference – Making Connections

April 29, 2008

In the Making Connections conference this morning. Very well blogged by my colleague Doug Clow so I will focus on the connections that I am making with the work of OpenLearn. The OU’s Vice Chancellor, Brenda Gourley, gave a very interesting keynote talk. She had a positive take on the challenges faced by the university, in describing the importance of innovation OpenLearn was cited as an innovation that was now welcomed across the university, but had gone against some views when we opened up content for free.

Rather than resting on what we do at the moment though we need to go forward to embrace communication, the session had kicked off with awards to 21 people for the innovations that they had carried out. A good indication of the enthusiasm within the Ou and hard work that is carried out – not just by full-time staff but by our many contracted part time staff – our “ALs”, Associate Lecturers. As these came through I kept thinking how could we offer some of these examples through something like OpenLearn – to get this great work out there for free. That won’t work in every case of course but worth following up!
