Jonathan’s eye tracking study

Jonathan is talking about in the OpenLearn context it is difficult to see how the students are learning since they are out there rather than in here and hence needs to meet them virtually (e.g. remote desktop sharing technology) or if in a lab through eye-tracking devices to check and see how the people learn.

Jonathan is talking about his eye-tracking set-up through the Tobii software/hardware. Ok tried taking a picture of the slide showing the set-up – but the noise on my camera is too much … so, I just get scared and move the camera and then it ends up blurred :(.

He’s talking about how the participant moves along the line when reading and it is like a worm-like track. He indicated that he triangulated this data with think-aloud data as well.

He is now talking about the remote observation study now (my stuff!!) … and he mentions that I’m doing the stuff with Windows Live Messenger but he is using Netviewer. Oh he is talking about Netviewer’s arrows, which are quite good and you don’t have that in the Windows Live Messenger (but mine is free … hahahaha!). He talks about the problem with Netviewer in that only one person is able to talk at a time whilst with the Windows Live Messenger that it can have synchronous talk.

He talked about the things he need to do to set up these tasks and in particular that they’re dependent on email … he is now going to show the videos of the eye-tracking device, but the video is not showing up – hopefully he is not going to get flustered. He is restarting Interact and has promised we would see the thing that we would really enjoy.

His videos are slightly delayed and cannot see the participant but I think quite impressive still … it is great seeing how there eyes are moving and how they’re scrolling the page and how also they’re using the mouse as a pointer.

He’s now going to show the remote observation thing (where I’m in the video – but perhaps it won’t show – but it does this time!!) …

He has identified that participants who looked at or open figures in pdf from the OpenLearn materials they don’t realise they can zoom in and out of this but with text they do it continuously (yes … I made the mistake – he showed me doing the mistake as well :D)!.

He is looking at the data logs about the mouse buttons and clicks etc to see what the student is doing but I lost him there – is this with the students knowledge adding some kind of software or is this something automatically done on the OpenLearn website?

He’s hoping in the future that eye scanners and eye trackers might be on computers … I’ll buy one if it is cheap! Question time

Some guy is talking about doing a study earlier about looking at how students use the webpage … but not with eye-tracking and said that the A-Z index was the most popular.

Someone asked how do they know whether a student finished a course on OpenLearn … Patrick is answering it, and he says they have a database telling them how much a students has finished and soon that they would be able to tell students that (I think that’ll be a great feature!)

Some guy is talking about some study either in Africa or Asia in which people were learning to use a mouse and it took some people up to 2 months to learn how to use it … reminds me of my problem with the left-hand mouse yesterday in which the left-click was rather right-click … that did get me rather frustrated until I figured it out.

Remote observation tends to make the students forget that they’re being observed (yup same things I found in my pilot study) …

Some guy talked about using the eye-tracking I think in an exam context so one would see if they are guessing.
